Obesity Rate Falls for New York Schoolchildren

The number of obese New York City schoolchildren fell by 5.5 percent over five years, federal and city officials said Thursday, offering a glimmer of optimism about one of the country’s intractable health scourges.

The decline, documented by annual fitness exams given to most of the city’s kindergarten through eighth-grade students, was the biggest reported by any large city. Over all, the rate of obesity dropped in New York City to 207 children per 1,000 in the 2010-11 school year, down from 219 five years earlier, meaning that 20.7 percent were still considered obese.

“This comes after decades of relentless increases,” Dr. Thomas A. Farley, the city’s health commissioner, said Thursday. While the 5.5 percent drop may seem slight, he said, “What’s impressive is the fact that it’s falling at all.”

The results, published Thursday in a report by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, showed that the declines in obesity were sharply higher among middle-class children than among poor children. They were also higher among white and Asian children compared with black and Hispanic children, and among very young children — those entering kindergarten or first grade — compared with older children.

“Because of coordinated, sustained action I am happy to say our children are benefiting from our campaign against obesity, which has plagued communities here in New York and across the nation for nearly three decades,” Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said.

Mr. Bloomberg said the 5.5 percent drop translated into roughly 6,500 fewer obese children in the public schools. He said that an overwhelming majority of parents think their children are fit and at a healthy weight, but that “the facts tell a different story.”

Dr. Farley attributed the progress partly to the city’s aggressive advertising campaign against sugary sodas, which he said may have altered what parents were providing to their children. The city has also tried to add healthier options to school lunch menus, enacted strict rules on the calorie and sugar content of snacks and drinks in school vending machines, and even put limits on bake sales, a move that caused some grumbling.

Buoyed by the results, city officials also announced Thursday that the restrictions on school vending machines were being expanded to machines in all city buildings, and that they were forming a multiagency task force to recommend further initiatives to combat obesity. Dr. Farley also noted that salad bars were now in cafeterias at many schools, including Public School 218, near Yankee Stadium, where the mayor and the commissioner announced the results at a news conference.ort Services, showed off a salad bar in the cafeteria of P.S. 20 on the Lower East Side.

3:23 p.m. | Updated The number of obese New York City schoolchildren fell by 5.5 percent over five years, federal and city officials said Thursday, offering a glimmer of optimism about one of the country’s intractable health scourges.

Still, the drops held up to some extent across all grades, races and economic levels.

Dr. Farley also noted that salad bars were now in cafeterias at many schools, including Public School 218, near Yankee Stadium, where the mayor and the commissioner announced the results at a news conference.

Across the country, recent studies have shown childhood obesity rates remaining flat or slightly increasing. Los Angeles County, which has also conducted a campaign against sugary drinks, had a decline of 2.5 percent during the same period, according to a study by the U.C.L.A. Center for Health Policy Research and the California Center for Public Health Advocacy.

The study was cautious in its language, warning, “A causal relationship cannot be inferred between the fitness interventions implemented by New York City in schools and the decrease in prevalence of child obesity described in this report.” But it said the decreases in obesity “might” indicate that changes in the school or home environment were important.

Obesity experts said that given the stubbornness of the problem, even a small reduction in obesity was an affirmation of public health initiatives.

“We’ve seen nothing but bad news for the last 10 years,” said Marlene Schwartz, deputy director of the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale University. “I feel like that’s finally starting to turn around.” Dr. Schwartz said younger children, who respond better to adult direction, and children in more affluent families, which have the resources to change, were the easiest to reach, so it was not surprising that they improved the most.

Dr. Farley said the fact that obesity had declined more among younger children was not surprising because it is easier to prevent weight gain than to lose weight. The city has trained 4,000 elementary school teachers to provide in-class physical activity breaks, the study said, and has tried to limit video and TV time in child care programs.

The High Cost of Failing Artificial Hips

Medical and legal experts estimate the hip failures may cost taxpayers, insurers, employers and others billions of dollars in coming years, contributing to the soaring cost of health care. The financial fallout is expected to be unusually large and complex because the episode involves a class of products, not a single device or just one company.

The case of Thomas Dougherty represents one particularly costly example. He spent five months this year without a left hip, largely stuck on a recliner watching his medical bills soar.

In August, Mr. Dougherty underwent an operation to replace a failed artificial hip, but his pelvis fractured soon afterward. The replacement hip was abandoned and then a serious infection set in. Some of the bills: $400,776 in charges related to hospitalizations, and $28,081 in doctors’ bills.

“I’m sitting here on a La-Z-Boy meant for someone who is 80 and I’m 55,” said Mr. Dougherty, who lives in Groveland, Ill., and works at Caterpillar, the heavy equipment manufacturer. His bills are “five times as much” as he paid for his home.

Exercise and Physical Fitness

There are 1,440 minutes in every day. Schedule 30 of them for physical activity!

Regular exercise is a critical part of staying healthy. People who are active live longer and feel better. Exercise can help you maintain a healthy weight. It can delay or prevent diabetes, some cancers and heart problems.

Most adults need at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity at least five days per week. Examples include walking briskly, mowing the lawn, dancing, swimming for recreation or bicycling. Stretching and weight training can also strengthen your body and improve your fitness level.

The key is to find the right exercise for you. If it is fun, you are more likely to stay motivated. You may want to walk with a friend, join a class or plan a group bike ride. If you've been inactive for awhile, use a sensible approach and start out slowly

Push Ups on the Pilates Ball

  • It's recommended to do this exercise on a yoga or exercise mat to prevent your feet from sliding; however, you can do this on the floor without a mat as well. Have a small Pilates ball under each hand. Set up in the push up position, with your hands directly below your shoulders and your body forming a straight line.
  • 2 Keeping your core engaged, inhale and bend your elbows, keeping them close to your sides. Go down as far as you can without collapsion

The Rise of Eco-friendly Fashion

Eco-fashion has a lot to compete with when you consider the wide world of clothing design, but it is slowly catching on.

If you don't have any eco-friendly clothing in your closet right now, it likely won't be long. Established designers, as well as new up-and-coming fashion gurus are offering the world earth inspired options. Everything from shirts, pants, dresses, skirts, jackets and even accessories are available to anyone who seeks to help our planet. Although eco-fashion in not new, it has taken some time to catch on. According to a report by the BBC it all started in the 1980s when people began voicing their concerns about chemicals in fabric. However, it wasn't until the early 90s that sweat shop labor pushed more and more designers to consider eco-fashion practices. Today a lot of consumers embrace the idea of going eco.

What is Eco-fashion?

When people want to purchase eco-clothing they need to research the label for authenticity. Environmentalists believe design houses can call their fashion eco-friendly if they adopt the 5 practices listed below.

Eco-fashion Practices

  • Use of organic raw materials such as cotton grown without pesticides or silk made from worms.
  • No harmful bleaches or other chemicals are applied.
  • Recycled or reused textiles are utilized.
  • Working conditions are good and pay for staff is fair.
  • The clothing is designed to last a long time.

Although some big department stores occasionally carry eco-clothing, Janie Georges, a professional shopper residing in San Francisco suggests letting your computer do the work. In a phone interview she said that the easiest way to find what you are looking for is to simply check online or do a search for designer run eco-fashion boutiques in your area. "I believe it is only a matter of time before we see more eco-friendly fashions in our local shopping plaza's... in the meantime, the net gives us plenty of places to choose from

Another type of women’s robes is known as the spa robe. Both men and women use this when they sweating it out in the spa. These spa robes start at $80 but are easily available at discounted prices. They are also available in a number of materials such as Chenille, polyester, micro fiber, poly-cotton, cotton and velour. They are usually simple and are less embellished than the regular bathrobes. The advantage of using chenille is that there is no mildew smell.

Rioter gets five years in longest sentence yet relating to August disorder

A man has been sentenced to five years' imprisonment for his part in the August riots – the longest sentence so far handed down to anyone convicted in relation to the summer disorder.

Junior Saunders, 36, of Hackney, east London, pleaded guilty to six charges including violent disorder, criminal damage to a police car, and burglary, all in Hackney.

One of the burglaries Saunders was sentenced for took place at the London Eye Opticians. Margaret Asare, the owner, told the Guardian earlier this week: "You build up your business, you know you have your stock, your money, your whole livelihood invested, everything ... And then you just have to walk away and let someone just smash it up."

She added: "In terms of business we lost trade. But personally it seriously affects me. I try not to think about it but you get upset when you hear about it. You get upset when you read about it. You get upset when you talk about it, you get upset when you have to figure out what went wrong."

In a statement the Metropolitan police said 20,000 pairs of glasses were stolen from the shop during the attack.

Police said Saunders had been seen on CCTV in Mare Street, Hackney, on Monday 8 August using a D-shaped cycle lock to cause "significant damage" to two police cars. He then threw stepladders and "other items" at police, and broke into the back of a lorry, where he stayed for 15 minutes passing planks of wood to other rioters.

The wood was used to smash the windows of buses, which were occupied at the time, and attack property. It was also thrown at police.

Saunders also attacked a branch of Tesco with a shovel and handed out looted property to other rioters.

According to the police the CCTV pictures showed him wearing a hooded top with a "distinctive" T-shirt underneath, beach shorts, "distinctive"

Widow who stole flowers from child's grave reported by her daughter

A 71-year-old widow has been fined for stealing flowers from a child's grave after being reported to police by her daughter.

Berta Manzanero, of Green Lane, Dagenham, east London, pleaded guilty to stealing four flowerpots worth £15 from the graves of relatives of Stephen Rose in Rippleside cemetery, Barking, last month.

The floral tributes were taken from the graves of Rose's aunt and cousin, Redbridge magistrates court heard. The cousin died as a child in the 1980s.

Manzanero was arrested on Thursday after her 39-year-old daughter recognised her picture in media reports and called police.

Ellen Warner, prosecuting, said: "Mr Rose's family noticed flowers had gone missing from the graves over 18 months and had CCTV put in place.

"When viewed, they showed a white woman bend down and pick up a quantity of flowers and plants, put them into her bag and carry them off.

"Still images were released by police to local media, and this week Mrs Manzanero's daughter telephoned police, stating it was her mother in this footage.

"She told police her mother had admitted it was her in the photo."

The court heard that Manzanero suffered depression after her 40-year-old son, who worked in the financial sector, killed himself.

After his death, Manzanero's husband and mother also died. It was their graves she visited at Rippleside cemetery.

Manzanero was fined £300, plus £30 costs and compensation, having admitted one count of theft.

Sentencing, the magistrate Glen Pierre told her: "We have taken into account the high sentimental value and the effect on the family concerned."

Kaushik Ramdhary, for the defence, said the theft had been an "impulsive" act brought on by Manzanero's love of flowers.

"On that day she went to visit relatives," he said, "and on her way back she saw some beautiful flowers and put them in her bag.

"She is fond of flowers, and on that particular day these flowers caught her eye. It was impulsive."

What do lads' mags and rapists have in common?

"Go and smash her on a park bench." Are these the words of a sex offender or those printed in one of the UK's leading lads' mags? Given the phrasing chosen by former Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys earlier this year, you might not find it hard to believe that this is in fact a direct quote from a mid-shelf publication. But a group of men and women participating in a study at Middlesex University found it difficult to differentiate between statements given by convicted rapists and the way lads' mags routinely describe women.

"In a group study, we distributed quotes on bits of card to 20 men and women and asked them to rank how degrading they were to women, then we revealed some were from rapists and some were from lads' mags, and asked them to attribute those quotes to either group," explained Dr Miranda Horvath, a senior lecturer in forensic psychology at Middlesex University who specialises in researching sexual violence. "The group guessed correctly 50% of the time. They clearly had considerable difficulty making quick decisions about where these quotes came from."

Quotes were taken from The Rapist Files: Interviews With Convicted Rapists by Sussman & Bordwell and four titles: Zoo, Nuts, Loaded and FHM. In an additonal study by the same researchers, a group of 92 men aged 18-46 were asked to participate in a similar exercise, but were also asked to say which of the quotes they identified with. The results revealed that overall, more of the men agreed with the rapists, only changing their minds when the source of the quote was revealed.

When I asked Dr Horvath to go through some of the quotes used in the study, what shocked me was that the language used by the lads' mags seemed much more repulsive than that offered up by the sex offenders to justify their crimes. Here's one of the samples from a magazine given to participants of the study: "A girl may like anal sex because it makes her feel incredibly naughty and she likes feeling like a dirty slut. If this is the case, you can try all sorts of humiliating acts to help live out her filthy fantasy." Here's a convicted rapist discussing his crime"There's a certain way you can tell that a girl wants to have sex . . . The way they dress, they flaunt themselves."

The first statement clearly delights in its own degradation. But the second statement unfortunately sounds like the kind of thing men or women routinely say; last year, a study by Haven showed that women were even less forgiving than men when it came to rape victims who had kissed their attacker, drank alcohol or "dressed provocatively".

Blame culture is problematic for obvious reasons, not least because its undefined boundaries occasionally lead, for example, broadsheet journalists to include details about an 11-year-old gang-rape victim such as whether she wore makeup, or looked older than her years, as if a child can be in anyway culpable for her own assault. What's more disturbing, when looking at the quotes used in the study, is that rapists and large sections of the general public seem to share a softened, "I'm not racist but" attitude for explaining away rape.

The editors of British lads' mags that I contacted either declined to be interviewed for this piece or didn't respond. Perhaps they're tiring of humourless spoilsports like me getting in touch to ask questions such as why they published a column advising a reader to "cut his ex's face, so no one will want her".

But Horvath and her colleagues are hoping that MPs will take notice of the pernicious effects this kind of language can have on young men and their attitude to women and review their attitudes to what passes for eyeline-level reading material in this country. "These findings raise a number of challenging questions," says Dr Horvath. "The apparent normalising effect of lads' mags runs counter to the work that is done with sex offenders both in prison and the community. Sex offender programmes challenge the men on them about their sexist, misogynistic and derogatory beliefs about women and seek to reeducate them. Yet it appears that some similar beliefs have been presented in recent lads' mags, which are normalised and accepted in mainstream society."

Phase two of Reading the Riots: first rioters, next police and judges

The interviews with 270 people directly involved in the August riots have formed the core of the first phase of Reading the Riots, the Guardian's collaborative study with the London School of Economics.

The second part of the research will look in greater detail at the experiences communities affected by the riots, police officers who battled to keep control of the streets and the criminal justice system which faced huge demand in the aftermath of the disorder.

Next month, with continuing support from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and the Open Society Foundations, we will host a series of grassroots debates in riot-affected cities across England.

The meetings will be open debates, organised in partnership with local community groups and radio stations, ensuring they are opportunities for communities in London, Birmingham, Manchester and elsewhere to express their views about the riots.

It is important that police, too, have a platform to convey their experiences of the disturbances. The Metropolitan police, which dealt with the largest amount of disorder, described the riots as "unprecedented".

Employing the same methodology used with rioters — confidential interviews — we hope to interview police officers of all ranks, not least those who risked their lives on the front-line under testing conditions.

The story of the England riots has as much to do with their aftermath, and in particular the response by the courts system.

More than 4,000 people have been arrested in connection with the riots; by mid-October, close to 2,000 people had been charged and over 600 had reached a final outcome.

At the height of disorder, courts were required to work under unusual circumstances, with all night court sittings required to cope with the sheer number of defendants. The director of public prosecutions, Keir Starmer QC, who visited Highbury magistrates court during one of the night sittings, was among the many who praised the criminal justice system for its handling of riot cases.

However the sentencing response — which has seen harsher than usual punishments for those involved in the riots, which have been considered an "aggravating" factor — has proved controversial.

The second phase of Reading the Riots will therefore seek to better understand how the courts system coped in the days, weeks and months after the riots, using interviews with judges and magistrates, as well as court staff, prosecutors and defence lawyers.

Next week, the Guardian and LSE will host a major conference to discuss the first phase research findings. Speakers include: Theresa May, the home secretary, Ed Miliband, the leader of the opposition, Bernard Hogan-Howe, the Metropolitan police commissioner, Yvette Cooper, the shadow home secretary, Julia Unwin, chief executive of Joseph Rowntree Foundation and Camila Batmanghelidjh of Kids Company.

Woman beat boyfriend with golf club after row in pub

A woman beat her partner with a golf club and wooden paddle then tried to cover up her attack by hiding him at a remote, derelict farmhouse, a court heard.

Laura Jones, 45, of Llanddewi Brefi, Ceredigion, west Wales, attacked her partner, Nathan Yates, after an acrimonious split in a pub. Her blows caused his skull to fracture.

The next day, rather than seeking medical attention, she drove Yates to the farmhouse and left him to survive on whisky, crisps and meals that she delivered.

Jones, who admitted grievous bodily harm, was given a 12-month jail term suspended for 24 months and ordered to do 200 hours of community work. Recorder Geraint Walters, the judge, also imposed a restraining order to stop Jones contacting Yates for three years.

Huw Rees, prosecuting, said that Jones and Yates, a former Daily Mirror journalist, had a "volatile relationship". "In particular, when she was drunk, she would turn into a nasty person," he told Swansea crown court on Friday.

The pair split up during an evening at a pub in Llanddewi Brefi in August last year, the court was told. But when Yates returned home later, he found Jones sitting on the bed. She picked up a paddle he had kept from his university days and assaulted him with it.

"She hit him many times with the paddle and jabbed him between the legs with it," Rees said. She eventually left the room and Yates went to sleep.

Rees said: "He woke up later when he felt something hit him on the left hand side of the head." The weapon was a metal golf club. Yates lost consciousness and woke the next morning with serious injuries, including a fractured skull, broken nose and bruising to the face, legs and back

The prosecutor said Yates was in a "bad way" but, rather than seeking medical help for him, Jones took him to a derelict farmhouse owned by her family.

She secured the door with bailing twine so that he could not get out and left him with crisps and whisky. She returned in subsequent days, bringing him pasta and beef stew. Yates was forced to sleep on a cold floor. There was no electricity in the farmhouse.

Yates was eventually found unconscious by his parents and taken to hospital.

Passing sentence, the judge said: "Whatever happened between you that night, there is no justification whatever for any person to take a weapon and strike another person in the face with it.

"I understand that what you did left Mr Yates in an awful state, where he worries about everyday life. You are very lucky that his injuries were not a lot more serious."

Couple cleared of killing son after doctors failed to diagnose rickets

A young couple walked free from court after being cleared of killing their four-month-old son who was suffering from rickets, a vitamin D deficiency that causes softening of the bones.

Rohan Wray, 22, and Chana al-Alas, 19, of Islington, north London fell under suspicion when baby Jayden died suddenly two years ago.

But, following a six-week trial at the Old Bailey, charges of murder and causing or allowing his death were dropped.

A jury returned not guilty verdicts on the direction of the judge after prosecutors withdrew the charges.

The couple, who were 16 and 19 when Jayden was born, hugged and kissed when they learned that their ordeal was over.

The court heard that Jayden died from brain damage and swelling, but nearly 60 medical, professional and expert witnesses were unable to agree on the cause.

Wray and al-Alas denied causing any injury to Jayden. The defence maintained that the seizures and fractures were linked to rickets.

Sally O'Neill QC, defending Wray, told jurors: "Jayden was indeed a much-loved and cared-for baby. Their care for him was transparently that of loving parents, even though they were young."

She said the couple had been "pre-judged" by doctors and police, but no one had known how ill Jayden was.

Wray told the court he was "very excited at the thought of being a parent" when he found out his girlfriend was pregnant. He said he was confused by the baby's injuries.

Al-Alas told the court the baby had a cold. She looked into his mouth and found his tongue was in the roof of his mouth.

Asked if she or Wray had shaken the baby or injured him, she said: "Never."

Her QC, Michael Turner, told the court there had never been any criticism of the couple's care for the baby.

The case comes amid legal warnings to prosecutors that shaken-baby cases should be supported by other evidence of abuse. And some experts believe that breastfeeding mothers, which al-Alas was, should be given vitamin D supplements.

Jenny Wiltshire, al-Alas's solicitor, said outside court: "Chana al-Alas and Rohan Wray can now be allowed to grieve the tragic loss of their son, who they loved and cherished.

"They have been through two and a half years of hell. They were prevented from comforting their dying son or attending his christening – all because clinicians at both hospitals failed to diagnose congenital rickets."

She added: "The real criminality in this case is that, if the money spent on this case had been directed to fulfilling the 1991 government directive that breastfeeding mothers be given vitamin D supplements, this death would not have occurred and rickets, which is now back up to epidemic proportions in this country, would have been wiped out."

Melton Mowbray policeman kills his wife and child after losing job

A former police inspector killed his wife and six-year-old daughter and seriously injured his two other children in a frenzied attack before killing himself after being sacked last week for misusing his force computer systems.

Detectives investigating Thursday's killings at the semi-detached home believe Tobias Day's attack on his family was precipitated by his dismissal by Leicestershire police.

Day, 37, is believed to have stabbed his wife Samantha, 38, a nursery teacher, and youngest daughter Genevieve, and inflicted serious injuries on his daughter Kimberley, 15, and son Adam,13, before taking his own life. Police have begun a murder inquiry but are not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths.

As residents in the residential street in Melton Mowbray spoke of their shock, the two surviving children were said to be in serious but stable conditions at the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham.

Leicestershire police said Day had been dismissed following a misconduct hearing over "matters concerning honesty and integrity" and concerning the misuse of the force computer systems.

Officers first answered a 999 call at 4.20pm over reports the elder daughter, Kimberley, had been injured. It is understood she fled the family home in Robin Crescent and ran to nearby Swallowdale primary school where emergency services were summoned.

She was taken to hospital and investigation officers forced their way into the family's home. It was later confirmed a man, woman and child had died.

Paramedics said there were two emergency calls an hour apart, the first from the school at 4.20pm reporting "an assault" and the second received direct from Leicestershire police at 5.24pm to Robin Crescent

Day, who had been the local policing commander for Beaumont Leys local policing unit (LPU) had been decorated for bravery. Neighbours described him as a fitness fanatic who was also an amateur football referee and who had run the London Marathon in memory of a colleague stabbed to death by her boyfriend.

Nigel Keep, who runs the nearby Nigel's Coffee Shop where Day was a customer, said he was "very depressed" at losing his job, and said he only had enough savings for "a couple of months" when he last saw him on Saturday.

"He had just left the police after 16 years' service," said Keep, who said it had been "a messy sacking". He added: "He did not see it coming and he just didn't know what to do."

Keep described Day as "a nice character" who organised a lot of things in the community. Day's wife had broken her ankle a few months ago and he would "wheel her around everywhere". The couple's daughters both attended classes at the Trevonne Stage School, said Keep, and Day would "nip across the road to where Trevonne rehearse to change Genevieve's dance shoes between tap and ballet lessons and do up the laces for her". Both girls had been appearing in Mother Goose at Melton Theatre this week.

Stuart Williams, principal at Catmose College in Oakham where Kimberley and Adam are pupils, said the school was "united in a deep state of utter shock". Genevieve is thought to have been a pupil at Saint Francis Catholic primary school in Melton.

The Early Years Nursery in Melton Mowbray, where Day's wife worked, was closed as a mark for respect "for a truly loved and wonderful person who will be sadly missed". One distraught parent said the nursery teacher had been preparing the nativity play due to take place next Friday. "Sam was the warmest person you could ever meet. She was so involved and was getting the children so excited about the nativity play."

Man, 37, arrested over death of widow after Oldham handbag mugging

A 37-year-old man has been arrested over the death of a widow whose handbag containing her husband's ashes was stolen by muggers. Nellie Geraghty, 79, suffered serious head injuries as she tried to cling on to her bag during the attack in Oldham, Greater Manchester, last month. She died in hospital almost a week later. The bag, which contained the ashes of her husband Frank, who died 17 years ago, was missing when Geraghty was discovered. The bag strap was in her hand. The ashes have not been found. Two teenage boys arrested in connection with the death have been bailed until 9 January.

Lodger charged with murdering landlady and her mother

A lodger has been charged with the murders of his landlady and her mother.

The strangled bodies of Angela Holgate, 54, and 75-year-old Alice Huyton were found at Holgate's home near Southport, Merseyside, last Saturday.

A Europe-wide investigation was launched after reports that a key suspect was seen arriving in Calais, France, following the murders.

A police spokesman said: "Merseyside police have today charged Barry Morrow, 51, of Fairhaven Road, Southport, with the murders of Angela Holgate and Alice Huyton.

"He has been remanded in custody to appear at South Sefton magistrates court on Monday."

Huyton had been married to her husband Jim for 55 years, with Angela their only daughter.

Huyton's son John - brother to Holgate - said the family was "bewildered and devastated at the loss of two very special people".

He said: "Both Alice and Angela were very popular and led active lives and had many friends.

"They meant so much in the eyes of different family members and held the roles of: great-grandmother, grandmother, mother, wife, aunty, sister and sister-in-law."

Huyton was last seen on Friday evening when she left her home in Southport to visit her daughter.

Liam Aitchison murder: Isle of Lewis grieves for its lost innocence

Down a track, at the end of the village of Steinish on the Isle of Lewis, police incident tape dances crazily, incongruously, in the wind. The Lewis wind is always bone-chilling in its ferocity. Today it whips up off the white, tossing waves across the mudflats of the bay, rustling the cellophane of bouquets left in tribute to a murdered 16-year-old boy, Liam Aitchison. There are pink roses and a bright spray of orange and yellow flowers. "Rest in peace, Liam," a young female friend has written. "God only takes the best."

Further up the track, hidden behind the police van and the trees, lies a derelict house, once owned by the Ministry of Defence. It makes an unprepossessing grave, but Liam's body was found here by coastguards on 29 November, around a week after he was killed. He wasn't reported missing for several days. Relatives have reported being told by the police he suffered a violent death, his head repeatedly struck with sharp-edged and blunt weapons

The events have bewildered – and frightened – a community that has not had a murder since 1968. "When we heard it was murder, we didn't believe it," says one young woman from the main town of Stornoway, just a few miles from Steinish. She wasn't even born when the last murder, that of an 80-year-old woman, was committed. "I feel very scared," she admits.

The story of Liam Aitchison is not just that of the murder of a vulnerable boy, who had neither a permanent home nor a job, but perhaps also the tale of the passing of a way of life. "This has stained our community," says John MacLeod, 45, who had tried to help Liam in the final weeks of his life. MacLeod, who met Liam on a ferry to the island, bought him food when he bumped into him again and was also helping him with his CV. "It's the loss of innocence. It will change the place irrevocably."

Lodger charged with murder of two women at Southport home

A man will appear in court on Monday charged with the murders of his landlady and her mother.

The strangled bodies of Angela Holgate, 54, and Alice Huyton, 75, were found at Holgate's home near Southport, Merseyside, last Saturday.

A Europe-wide investigation was launched after reports that a key suspect was seen arriving in Calais, France, following the murders. A man was arrested in the UK on Thursday.

A police spokesman said: "Merseyside police have today charged Barry Morrow, 51, of Fairhaven Road, Southport, with the murders of Angela Holgate and Alice Huyton. He has been remanded in custody to appear at South Sefton magistrates court on Monday."

Angela Holgate, who worked for Avon, and her mother were found by a relative at Holgate's home last Saturday evening. Postmortems showed both women died from asphyxiation.

Huyton had been married to her husband Jim for 55 years. Angela was their only daughter.

Huyton's son John, Holgate's brother, said the family was "bewildered and devastated at the loss of two very special people".

He said: "Both Alice and Angela were very popular and led active lives and had many friends. They meant so much in the eyes of different family members and held the roles of great-grandmother, grandmother, mother, wife, auntie, sister and sister-in-law. The sad loss has had a severe impact on the whole family."

Huyton was last seen on the evening of Friday 2 December, when she left her home in Southport to visit her daughter.

Holgate, who was divorced and had two adult daughters, had been ill and had not been seen out of the house for a week.

Murder inquiry launched into Leeds deaths

Richard Smith, his wife Clair and their children Ben, nine, and Aaron, one, were found in a fire-damaged upstairs bedroom of their house in a cul-de-sac late on Sunday afternoon.

Detectives are thought to be treating it as a case of murder/suicide. No one else is being sought.

Mr Smith, 37, and his 36-year-old wife are thought to have moved into the house a few months ago.

Part of Sheridan Way where the house is located was initially cordoned off amid fears that dangerous chemicals might be present.

Detective Superintendent Paul Taylor of the West Yorkshire police homicide and major inquiry team said on Monday: "Initially, we had concerns regarding the release of harmful chemicals or gases.

"Following testing, we no longer have any concerns with regards to those working at the scene and we will continue our investigations today.

"Inquiries are at an early stage and I would ask anyone with information about the incident to contact the homicide and major inquiry team."

Neighbours spoke of their shock.

One woman who laid flowers at the police cordon said her children went to school with Ben. She said: "It's terrible. From what I saw of them, they were very fun-loving, kind and caring – full of life."

The woman, who did not want to be named, said: "They were a nice family."

Another neighbour, who lives round the corner, said: "It's such a shock. We've been up all night watching what's been going on.

"This really is a quiet street. You just don't expect it.

"I didn't know them, apart from seeing them around and about.

Liam Aitchison murder: police charge two men

Two men, aged 21 and 20, have been charged over the murder of a teenage boy on the Isle of Lewis. The Northern constabulary said a report would be made to the procurator fiscal over the murder of Liam Aitchison, 16. Liam was the first person to be killed on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides for more than 40 years. His body was discovered by search teams in a derelict RAF building in the Steinish area of Stornoway on 29 November, a week after he went missing from home. Liam, who came from Uist, had been living in Stornoway for two months.

Communicating the benefits of your product, service or idea, simply and clearly

Imagine a world where everyone is in sales. Well, the fact is, everyone is in sales, in some fashion. It's not just the salesman at the car lot or computer reseller who qualifies: Maybe you are trying to sell your spouse your ideas for the next holiday; Maybe you're pitching a new project to your boss; Maybe you are headhunting someone to join your firm. It's all selling, and, whatever your offer (product, idea, project or job) it's important to have a really strong value proposition.

A value proposition is a short statement that clearly communicates the benefits that your potential client gets by using your product, service or idea. It "boils down" all the complexity of your sales pitch into something that your client can easily grasp and remember.

It needs to be very specific: Simply describing the features or capabilities of your offer is not enough. Your value proposition must focus closely on what your customer really wants and values. Your customer wants to solve problems, to improve on existing solutions, to have a better life, build a better business or do more, better, faster. and so on.

Creating a value proposition is a useful marketing technique that had wider application than product marketing. Whatever you are 'selling' and to whom, a value proposition is useful, if not essential, tool. Whether your 'customers' are external customers, employees, co-workers or even your family, the idea is to help them see the specific value your offer brings to them. And by doing so, you will grab their attention in such a way that they know: "Yes, that's right for me".

Powers of Persuasion Understanding the Dos and Don’ts of Persuading

How do you persuade someone to do something? Do you rely on your authority over them? Do you "sell, sell, sell," with benefits statements and other Marketing 101 techniques? Do you cater to logic and set up rock solid arguments? Or do you show unwavering persistence in your position and stick with it until others agree that you are right?

All of these approaches can be tempting, but they're not always the most effective means of persuasion. In a defining 1998 article in the Harvard Business Review titled "The Necessary Art of Persuasion," Jay Conger, an Organizational Behavior professor, presented a very different view of persuasion. He said that to be persuasive you must provide four critical elements:

  • Credibility
  • Common Ground
  • Vivid Evidence
  • Emotional Connection

We'll talk about these elements in detail, but first let's look at why it's important to know how to be persuasive. Persuasion isn't all about selling. Nor is it trying to convince someone to agree with you. It's about getting to shared understanding and agreement. From there you work together to reach a mutually beneficial outcome.

Managers need to be good persuaders. They need to accomplish objectives through people. They could choose to bully, dictate, or coerce people to get the work done, but how successful would that be in the long run? If they use persuasion effectively, they will lead employees to want to reach a shared solution.

Likewise, in any situation where you need to persuade someone to work with you or you want to promote your idea, if you badger them and sell excessively, you'll only create resentment. Establishing mutual understanding is what leads to an agreement; One that is negotiated not forced.

Monroe's Motivated Sequence Perfecting the call to act

Is persuasion a gift? Are some people born with the ability to speak well and 'sell' their ideas successfully?

It sure seems that way when you're wowed by a motivational speaker, or galvanized into action by a thought-provoking presentation.

In your role, do you ever need to motivate, inspire, or persuade others? Whether you're a senior executive giving a presentation to the Board, a manager giving a morale-boosting speech to your team, or a production manager giving a presentation on safety standards, at some point, you'll probably have to move people to action.

While there are certainly those who seem to inspire and deliver memorable speeches effortlessly, the rest of us can learn how to give effective presentations too. Key factors include putting together a strong message and delivering it in the right sequence.

Monroe's Motivated Sequence: The Five Steps

Alan H. Monroe, a Purdue University professor, used the psychology of persuasion to develop an outline for making speeches that will deliver results. It's now known as Monroe's Motivated Sequence.

This is a well-used and time-proven method to organize presentations for maximum impact. You can use it for a variety of situations to create and arrange the components of any message.

Communications Planning

Have you ever received a memo and felt the sender really wasn't thinking about what you needed to know or hear? Maybe you have attended corporate presentations that have simply left you cold? Or perhaps you've even delivered communications yourself and realized, in retrospect, that you really hadn't got the measure of your audience and their needs.

This is at best frustrating. At worst it is such a huge "turn off" that it can have a negative effect, or even produce an effect that is the exact opposite of the one you had intended.

Whether you need to communicate general day-to-day information or "big news" about major changes in your organization, the best communications start with some good planning.

The first step is to put yourself in the shoes of your audience. What do they need to know, and want to hear? What's their preferred way of receiving information? What will stop them listening to what you have to say? And how will you know that they have got the message?

So there's quite a bit more to good communications than preparing a good memo or presentation! This tool will help you through the preparation steps and so help you create an audience-focused communication plan that's sure to get your message heard.

How Good Are Your Communication Skills?

Communication skills are some of the most important skills that you need to succeed in the workplace.

We talk to people face to face, and we listen when people talk to us. We write emails and reports, and we read the documents that are sent to us. Communication, therefore, is a process that involves at least two people – a sender and a receiver. For it to be successful, the receiver must understand the message in the way that the sender intended.

This sounds quite simple. But have you ever been in a situation where this hasn't happened? Misunderstanding and confusion often occur, and they can cause enormous problems.

If you want to be an expert communicator, you need to be effective at all points in the communication process – and you must be comfortable with the different channels of communication. When you communicate well, you can be very successful. On the other hand, poor communicators struggle to develop their careers beyond a certain point.

How do We Battle CyberBullying? By, Claudio V. Cerullo, Ph.D

Cyberbullying is any for of harassment that occurs via the internet or other technological tool. Vicious posts, name calling in chat rooms, blogs, facebook, Myspace, posting fake profiles on web sites, and mean or cruel email messages and text messages are all forms of cyberbullying.

Some Examples of how cyberbullying works:

Student (A) is bombarded by anonymous threatening and taunting emails at home, even though there is no direct harassment at school. The victim has no idea who is sending the messages and starts to feel like everybody is against him or her. That student is now being cyberbullied.

Student (B) a school bulletin board is spammed with name-calling posts that spread vicious rumors about this specific student. The rumors are not true, but students at school see the posts and asume them credible. The student is then ostracized by his or her. This student is now a victim of cyberbullying.

A nasty fake profile is posted at a social networking site such as facebook or myspace, using a student’s real name, photo, and contact information. That student starts getting strange email messages from strangers who think the profile is real. Some of the messages are crude and defaming. Some of the messages are mean and vulgar. This is yet another example of cyberbullying. As I have illustrated just a few examples of cuberbullying, if you are taking part in things like this it is NOT harmless fun. You are being a cyberbully. If you are the victim of this type of treatment you are being cyberbullied and there are things you can do to stop this form of harassment.

Why Does Cyberbulling Occur?

Bullying has been around for over a hundred years, but cyberbullying is very different, because it lets a bully remain anonymous, just like when people blog and do not post their real names. It is easier to bully in cyberspace than it is to bully face to face. With cyberbullying a bully can pick on people with much less risk of being caught, or little do they think.

Bullies are natural instigators and in cyberspace bullies can enlist the participation of other students who may be unwilling to bully in the real world. Students who stand around doing nothing in a real life bullying incident often become active participants in on-line harassment.

The detachment afforded by cyberspace makes bullies out of people who would never become involved in a real life incident. The internet makes bullying more convenient and since the victim’s reaction remains unseen people who wouldn’t normally bully do not take it as seriously.

What Can You Do if You Experience Cyberbullying?

There are many things that can be done to combat cyberbullying. The most important thing a victim of cyberbullying can do is to NOT respond to the bully. Do not play in to the bully's games. Do not answer emails, do not respond to posts, do not engage in a chat room exchange, and do not copy what the bully is doing. Ignore the bullying and get help from parents and teachers. Also, please document any and all emails, post, blogs, or text messages you receive. This will be very important later when school officials and law enforcement officials do an investigation. Internet providers and even the police can properly deal with the bully. Cyberbullying may give bullies anonymity but it always leaves a long trial of evidence to work with.

Can Cyberbullying Be Prevented?

Schools and communities nation-wide take all types of bullying seriously. As soon as the cyberbullying starts go to school officials for help. Cyberbullying is often an extension or escalation of bullying that is already happening at school. Parents should also be told what is happening.

Law enforcement officials are unlikely to become involved if the bullying is limited to an isolated incident or a couple of mean emails or text messages. However, if you get even one communication that includes a threat of physical harm or a threat of death, contact your local police department right a way. Be aware that urging suicide is considered a death threat and the police will treat it accordingly under local and state statue.

When Should You Involve Your Local Police Department?

When cyberbullying is repeated and takes on excessive harassment via email, text messages, forums or chat rooms are all forms of harassment and should involve your local police department. Threats of violence should also be reported to the police. Very important, please save all messages as evidence of record. The police will know what to do from there.

You do not need or deserve to put up with cyberbullying. Help is out there and your self-esteem and life are far too valuable to be placed in harms way by a coward using technology in a bad way. Cyberbullying leaves a clear trail of evidence and this can work to the advantage of the victim. Cyberbullies are just bullies with a new weapon in their arsenal of bad behavior; treat them like you would any bully and they will not only lose their power, but also face crimin
